HMRC has published a guide listing the commercial software suppliers that can be used to file Self Assessment tax returns. The guide was published on 21 October 2026.
What the list covers
HMRC says you can use the suppliers on the list to submit valid tax returns, supplementary pages and attachments for the products in its guide.
Supplementary pages are the extra sections of the return that some people need, for example for self-employment or property income.
Pre-filled details
Some commercial software has a feature that lets you get details from HMRC. HMRC says this can help you complete your own Self Assessment tax return. Agents can use it to complete a client's return.
Not every product has this feature. HMRC says you should check with your software supplier to find out if theirs does.
If you use GOV.UK One Login
If you sign in to HMRC online services using GOV.UK One Login, you will need to create a unique user ID and password before you can submit your Self Assessment tax return using commercial software.
It is worth sorting this out well before you plan to file, so it does not hold you up.
Who this affects
- Individuals who file their own return using commercial software
- Sole traders and landlords who use software to complete their return
- Anyone who signs in to HMRC online services with GOV.UK One Login
What you need to do
- If you file using commercial software, check that your supplier is on HMRC's list.
- Ask your supplier whether their product can get details from HMRC.
- If you use GOV.UK One Login, create the separate user ID and password for software filing.
