Self Assessment: 100 days to the 31 January 2027 deadline

HMRC is urging people to file their 2025 to 2026 Self Assessment tax return early. The online filing and payment deadline is 31 January 2027.

  • 2 minute read

HMRC says there are 100 days left until the Self Assessment deadline. If you need to file a tax return for the 2025 to 2026 tax year, you have until 31 January 2027 to file it online and pay any tax owed.

Why file early?

HMRC says filing early means you can:

  • find out how much tax you owe before the deadline
  • have more time to budget
  • get a refund sooner if you have overpaid
  • avoid penalties

Key points to know

  • If you are new to Self Assessment, you must first register to get a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). You will need it to file.
  • If you are not sure whether you need to file, HMRC has a checker tool on GOV.UK. You can also tell HMRC there if you no longer need to file.
  • If you file on paper, the deadline is 31 October 2026.
  • If you have PAYE income, you can file online before 30 December and have any tax owed collected through your tax code.
  • If you are signed up to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you still need to send your Self Assessment return in the usual way and pay by 31 January 2027.

Things that may be new on your return

If you received the 2025 Winter Fuel Payment and are in Self Assessment, it should be filled in on your online return where possible. Please check it. If it is missing, you need to add it yourself. If your total income is over £35,000, you pay it back through your Self Assessment bill.

Around 300,000 people who pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge through Self Assessment will now see Child Benefit details filled in on their online return. Some people may be able to pay the charge monthly through their salary instead.

If you own cryptoassets, gains above the £3,000 tax-free allowance are subject to Capital Gains Tax. You need to declare them on your return.
