Hiring someone? Check their right to work first.

Every employer has to check that a new starter can legally work in the UK before they begin. We do the check the right way, keep the evidence and give you a confirmation you can show if the Home Office ever asks.

A proper check protects you.

If you employ someone who isn't allowed to work in the UK, you can be fined up to £60,000 for each worker. A correct check, done before they start and kept on file, is your defence.

The check has to follow Home Office guidance, and you check every new starter, whatever their nationality. Checking only the people you think might not be British can count as discrimination.

Some people only have permission to work for a limited time, so you must check them again before it runs out. We'll tell you if that applies.

Three ways to check
right to work.

The Home Office accepts three kinds of check. Which one you use depends on the person in front of you. We pick the right one and do it properly.

  1. Manual document check
  2. Online check with a share code
  3. Digital identity check
  • 1 of 3

    Manual document check

For: Anyone, including British and Irish citizens

See the original document with its owner there. Check it's genuine and theirs, then keep a dated copy on file.

    • Passport or other accepted document
    • Seen with the person present
    • Copy kept and dated
  • 2 of 3

Online check with a share code

For: People with an eVisa or other immigration permission

They give you a share code from GOV.UK. You enter it with their date of birth on the Home Office service, check the photo is them and save the result.

    • Share code from the person
    • Checked on the Home Office service
    • Result saved for your records
  • 3 of 3

    Digital identity check

For: British and Irish citizens with a valid passport

A certified identity service provider (IDSP) checks the passport using identity document validation technology. You make sure the person matches the photo.

    • Valid British or Irish passport
    • Checked by a certified IDSP
    • No need to handle the passport

What a share code check looks like

The person gets a share code from GOV.UK and gives it to you with their date of birth. The Home Office service shows their photo and whether they can do the job. We run the real check for you and save the result.

Example only: not a real person, code or result.

The questions people ask us most. If yours isn't here, ring us and you'll get a straight answer.

Yes. You must check everyone before they start work, whatever their nationality. Checking only some people can count as discrimination.

A manual check of original documents, an online check with a Home Office share code, or a digital identity check through a certified identity service provider (IDSP). Which one fits depends on the person and their documents.

People with immigration permission, such as an eVisa, can get a share code on GOV.UK to prove their right to work. British and Irish citizens can't get one, so they show their passport or use a digital identity check.

A certified identity service provider checks a British or Irish citizen's valid passport (or Irish passport card) using identity document validation technology, so you don't have to handle the passport yourself.

No. Employers can no longer accept biometric residence cards or permits. People who had one now prove their right to work online with a share code.

If you employ someone who isn't allowed to do the work, you can be fined up to £60,000 per worker. A correct check, done before they start and recorded properly, gives you a defence against the fine.
